Vendler’s puzzle about imagination

چکیده
Vendler’s (Revue de Metaphysique et Morale 84(2):161–173, 1979) puzzle about imagination is that the sentences ‘Imagine swimming in water’ and yourself seem at once semantically different same. They different, since first requires you to imagine ’from inside’, while second allows outside.’ same, despite superficial dissimilarity, there good reason think they are syntactically lexically identical. This paper sets out offers a novel solution. Our proposal that, just as knowledge-wh (know-how, know-what etc), also imagining-wh (imagining-how, imagining-what etc) inside/outside distinction Vendler points properly understood within imagining-wh. In particular, from inside what it feels like swim, outside looks swim. We show this well grounded both semantics syntax of ‘imagine.’ argue makes better sense than its rivals data found so puzzling.

A puzzle about withholding
This paper presents a puzzle about justification and withholding. The puzzle arises in a special case where experts advise us to not withhold judgment. My main thesis is simply that the puzzle is genuinely a puzzle, and so leads us to rethink some common assumptions in epistemology, specifically assumptions about the nature of justification and doxastic attitudes. Section 1 introduces the commo...
متن کاملA puzzle about belief updating
In recent decades much literature has been produced on disagreement; the puzzling conclusion being that epistemic disagreement is, for the most part, either impossible (e.g. Aumann (Ann Stat 4(6):1236–1239, 1976)), or at least easily resolvable (e.g. Elga (Noûs 41(3):478–502, 2007)). In this paper I show that, under certain conditions, an equally puzzling result arises: that is, disagreement ca...
متن کاملA Puzzle about Further Facts∗
In metaphysics, there are a number of distinct but related questions about the existence of “further facts”—facts that are contingent relative to the physical structure of the universe. These include further facts about qualia, personal identity, and time. In this article I provide a sequence of examples involving computer simulations, ranging from one in which the protagonist can clearly concl...
متن کاملFlexible Contextualism about Deontic Modals: A Puzzle about Information-Sensitivity
According to a recent challenge to Kratzer’s canonical contextualist semantics for deontic modal expressions, no contextualist view can make sense of cases in which such a modal must be information-sensitive in some way. Here I show howKratzer’s semantics is compatible with readings of the targeted sentences that fit with the data. I then outline a general account of how contexts select paramet...
